Water Emergencies – Guidance for Schools and Child Care Facilities

Preparation is the best protection during a water emergency. It is important that school and child care leaders take the necessary steps now to protect students, children, staff and property in the event of a water emergency.

Water Emergencies

District of Columbia Water (DC Water) designates schools and child care facilities as Critical Customers. To prepare for an emergency, it is important for schools and child care facilities to sign up for Critical Customer Alerts and to review the DC Water Critical Customer webpage. Schools and child care facilities should also review the Critical Customer Water and Wastewater Emergency Response Guide and self-evaluate their facility’s preparedness.

To report a water emergency, such as a water main break or a sewer backup, contact DC Water at (202) 612-3400 or report an emergency through their online system.

School or child care facility leadership may determine it is necessary to temporarily close or shift to distance learning during a water emergency.

Boil Water Advisory

A boil water advisory is a public health recommendation or directive issued by DC Water to inform residents and businesses that the tap water may be contaminated and should not be consumed or used for certain activities without first boiling it. Schools and child care facilities should review the resources below to understand the immediate steps to take for protecting health and safety.

Students and Families

Proper planning for a water emergency can prevent unsafe interactions with potentially contaminated water. Parents and guardians can stay up to date with local water emergencies by visiting DC Water.
