College and Career Education

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) partners with schools, local education agencies (LEAs), colleges, and local nonprofits to develop and fund programs that help all students in DC access programs that will help them be ready for their next step after high school.

OSSE supports and funds programs for students who are looking for help gaining college experience, college coursework, or getting help applying for college. Find out about College Application & Exploration Month, OSSE Scholars, and support for advanced coursework such as Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) and dual enrollment.

Career education within the District of Columbia is a District-wide, secondary, postsecondary, college and career preparation system. Check out Career and Technical Education programs and supports, the DC Career Academy Network, and other Career Education Development funding opportunities.

Financial assistance like scholarships and grants supports students’ college enrollment and graduation goals. OSSE shares opportunities for DC residents here, including the DC Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG)Mayor's Scholars Undergraduate Program, and the DC Futures Program.

The Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) establishes standards for colleges and universities, authorizes operations, approves programs, issues or denies licenses to, and oversees all private postsecondary educational institutions in the District of Columbia. It is the only entity authorized by the mayor to issue educational licenses.
