District of Columbia NAEP Scores Show Sustained, Significant Improvement, Outpace the Nation

Fourth grade students in the District of Columbia posted significant gains in reading and math, while reading and math scores for eighth grade students remained statistically even with 2013 results, according to the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Average scale scores for fourth grade students in the District increased seven points in reading and three points in math between 2013 and 2015.

Today, District of Columbia education leaders announced a new baseline for how high school students are performing in DC. As part of its commitment to education reform, the District recently implemented the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).

LEA Institute I: It Takes a City to Support School Excellence!

OSSE is pleased to announce that registration is now open for its first school year 2015-16 LEA Institute, “It Takes a City to Support School Excellence!,” to be held on Nov. 18, 2015 at the Kellogg Center at Gallaudet University. This event is targeted to schools classified as Priority or Focus under the DC Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver. Other schools may apply to attend, but preference will be provided to school teams from Priority and Focus schools.

The Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) today released results of an independent investigation into testing integrity and security procedures related to the administration of the 2013-2014 District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC CAS) with most findings deemed procedural or documentation errors.

(Washington, DC) – Today the District of Columbia received approval from the U.S. Department of Education to continue implementation of its Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility waiver through school year 2017-18. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) submitted an amended ESEA flexibility waiver application on behalf of the District of Columbia in March 2015.

Mayor Bowser and Celebrity Chef Skip Mendelsohn Celebrate Strawberries and Salad Greens Day at Burroughs Education Campus

Yesterday, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Celebrity Chef and DC Food Policy Council Chairman Spike Mendelsohn, Deputy Mayor for Education Jennie Niles and acting State Superintendent of Education Hanseul Kang joined students and teachers at Burroughs Education Campus for the 2015 Strawberries and Salad Greens Day. The annual event, sponsored by the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), offers DC students the opportunity to taste locally grown berries and greens and learn about the local foods featured in their school meals as part of the National School Lunch Program.
