Educator Credentialing and Certification

New! Exams for Reading Specialist and Middle School Science Teachers 
Beginning Sept. 1, 2021, OSSE has adapted two new subject content exams to replace expiring exams needed for Reading Specialist (Grades PreK-12) and Middle School Science (Grades 4-8) educator certification 

In-Person Educator Credentialing Support Resumes 
Beginning on July 19, 2021, OSSE will provide in-person educator credentialing support to applicants at our office (1050 First St. NE) from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. All applicants will be asked to sign in upon arrival and must be wearing facemasks. Applicants must come prepared with their own laptops and have scanned copies of all required documents to receive proper service during their visit.  

Cessation of COVID-19 Educator Credential Extensions
Consistent with Mayor’s Order 2021-096, at 12:01 a.m. on July 25, 2021, the District of Columbia COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, originally declared by the Mayor in Mayor’s Order 2020-046, has ended. Any individual who holds an educator credential (including a teacher, principal or assistant principal credential) that would have expired during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency will have 45 days beginning July 25, 2021 to comply with OSSE’s educator credential requirements, or their educator credential will expire.

School-based Health Professionals
OSSE recommends that school-based health professionals practicing as audiologists, counselors, social workers, speech language pathologists and psychologists who are currently employed at a DC public charter school or private school, contact the applicable professional licensing board within the DC Department of Health for information regarding licensing requirements to operate in those facilities.
