WASHINGTON, DC – More than 40 percent of District of Columbia school-aged children are obese or overweight. The D.C. Healthy Schools Act was enacted in 2010 to combat this epidemic through improved school nutrition, and enhanced physical activity, physical education and health education during the school day. The Act also encourages the use of school gardens and farm-to-school programs as educational tools.
(Washington, DC) – The District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) reported today that for the fifth consecutive year, student enrollment in the District of Columbia’s public schools has increased. According to preliminary, unaudited data released today by OSSE, enrollment for the DC Public Schools (DCPS) and DC Public Charter Schools (PCS) increased by 3.9 percent for the 2013-2014 School Year (SY), as compared to the prior school year.
WASHINGTON, DC –The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) announced today the District of Columbia finalists for the 2013 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The awards, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, grant the nation’s highest honor to secondary teachers for bringing innovation and inspiration to their classrooms and communities.
With severe storms expected in the area today, delays are likely in special education transportation services this afternoon. Parents are urged to monitor the local news to see if their child’s school is closing early. If DCPS closes schools early, OSSE-DOT will make adjustments to the transportation schedule.
WHAT/WHO: The high-school girls’ softball teams of DC public schools and independent schools will compete in the District’s first softball tournament, hosted by the DC State Athletic Association.
Meeting the goals of the DCSAA, the tournament will foster inter-District high school sports participation, enhance the validity of the championship title, and promote greater recognition for District athletes.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is required to notify the public that the agency is requesting a waiver from the United States Department of Education (ED) to allow OSSE to grant an LEA a waiver of the 15 percent carryover limitation rule. Comments regarding this request must be submitted to OSSE by May 6, 2013. This information will be included in the waiver request to ED. (Washington, D.C.) – In early March, universities serving D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) program students were notified of the delayed payment processing as a result of Public Law 112-175. With both the Senate and House of Representatives passing the Continuing Resolution this week, and the President’s signature expected March 27, vital funding will resume and, funds to universities on behalf of DCTAG students will continue as scheduled.
