OSSE Encourages Educators to Attend Virtual Literacy Conference on May 22

Third Annual OSSE Literacy Convening Connects Educators and Administrators to National Researchers, Local Coaches, and Literacy Experts for a Day of Professional Learning

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) encourages DC educators, administrators, and community members to attend the upcoming 2024 Literacy Conference to learn about supporting evidence-based literacy instruction from birth to grade 12. The theme for the 2024 OSSE Literacy Conference is Sustaining Excellent Literacy Instruction: Unraveling Comprehension from Pre-K to Adolescence. The conference takes place from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, virtually at OSSELiteracy.vfairs.com.

“The 2024 OSSE Literacy Conference provides outstanding opportunities for attendees to build capacity through professional learning while simultaneously empowering educators with tailored sessions for each grade and strategies to deliver effective, research-based instruction to all learners,” said State Superintendent Dr. Christina Grant. “I encourage everyone with a stake in literacy education to attend the 2024 OSSE Literacy Conference as we continue our work together to improve literacy throughout the District.”

OSSE’s annual literacy conference is supported by the five-year Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant (CLSD) that OSSE has been implementing since 2020. This year’s Literacy Conference will feature presentations from the Center for Reading Science, Keys to Literacy, the Literacy Architects, OSSE, and Readsters, alongside speakers such as: Dr. Amy Elleman, Dr. Carolyn Denton, Dr. Carolyn Strom, Janeé R. Butler, Dr. Jasmine Rogers, and Dr. Tomiko Ball.

OSSE’s 2023-2025 Strategic Plan's Advancing Excellence priority includes a key initiative to Improve Literacy Instruction. OSSE, in partnership with stakeholders and building upon existing investments, has developed and is implementing a citywide vision for literacy instruction (DC State-Wide Comprehensive Literacy Plan (CLP) and Early Literacy Task Force Report). This vision and the corresponding implementation supports are grounded in the science of reading, and include a suite of instructional resources and trainings for aspiring and current DC educators.

is leading on several critical projects to ensure educators and students are well supported, including the Early Literacy Education Task Force, implementation of DC Law 23-191 Addressing Dyslexia and Other Reading Difficulties Amendment Act of 2020 and the execution of the federal CLSD grant. In addition to these projects, offers robust professional learning for educators. On the OSSE Learning Management System (LMS), educators have access to a variety of training opportunities, including an asynchronous course on the science of reading.
