1. What is the purpose of the DC Physical Activity for Youth (PAY) grant?

The purpose of this grant is to increase the capacity of D.C. schools to provide physical activity to students before, during, or after the school day.

2. How much funding is available?

The total funding available for this award period is $200,000. Eligible schools may apply for an award amount of up to $10,000 to fund a physical activity program.

3. What organizations are eligible to apply?

OSSE will accept applications from Washington D.C. public schools and public charter schools participating in the Healthy Schools Act (2010) and community-based organizations applying on behalf of a school. Past award recipients are eligible; however, a school may only receive the DC PAY grant three times in a five year period. Community-based organizations may apply on behalf of up to four different schools.

4. When is the application period?

The Request for Application release date is February 7, 2014 and the application submission deadline is April 4, 2014.

5. What are the requirements of the grant?

Schools must have completed the most recent Healthy Schools Act School Health Profile to be eligible for this grant. Grantees are required to create, if not already established, a Wellness Advisory Board that meets four times a year and a Physical Activity Coordinator (PAC) position. The PAC will oversee the grant, organize two community- building events, submit two reports to OSSE, and participate in three trainings during the grant period.

Applicants must contribute cost-sharing funds equal to or greater than 20% of the grant amount. Volunteer time may be used to satisfy this requirement. Applicants applying for less than $5,000 are not required to contribute cost- sharing funds.

6. Does the Physical Activity Coordinator need to be a school staff member?

The Physical Activity Coordinator may hold an existing position within the school or may be a person outside of the school staff.
