DC Green Ribbon School Applications

Thank you for your interest in completing the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE) application for nomination to US Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools. Green Ribbon Schools recognizes schools taking a comprehensive approach to greening their school. A comprehensive approach incorporates environmental learning with improving environmental and health impacts. OSSE is the nominating authority for District schools. All schools applying for the Green Ribbon Schools Award must submit an application to OSSE for review. OSSE will then nominate up to four District schools for consideration. Selection will be based on documentation of the applicant's high achievement in the three Green Ribbon Schools Pillars:

Pillar I: Reduce environmental impact and costs.

Pillar II: Improve the health and wellness of students and staff.

Pillar III: Effective environmental and sustainability education.

Schools demonstrating achievement in all three Pillars will receive the highest rankings therefore it is important to document concrete achievements in all three. In order to complete this application, you will need to collect data about your school's facility, health and safety policies, food service, and environmental and sustainability curriculum. It is recommended that you assemble a team to complete the application.

This team might include:

  • Facilities manager
  • Physical education director
  • Food services director
  • Curriculum director
  • Finance department representative
  • Teachers and students.

If available, an active School Wellness Committee can also be of great assistance in the completion of the application. For more information on the award including resources for applicants, prior winners, and FAQs, consult the Green Ribbon Schools home page. This website is an excellent clearinghouse of resources for all schools, not just those who apply. A network of District agencies and organizations is available to support you through this process. In order to receive support, please send a brief email indicating your intent to apply to Grace Manubay, Environmental Literacy Coordinator by Monday, Dec 3, 2018. Failure to do this will limit the ability of District agencies to support you, but will not disqualify your school from applying.

Applications are due by Tuesday, Jan 22, 2019. Please submit applications to [email protected].
