The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is the State Education Agency for the District of Columbia charged with raising the quality of education for all DC residents. The Division of Student Transportation (OSSE-DOT) is responsible for administering safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for students with disabilities who require it under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). OSSE-DOT provides services for more than 3100 students to schools along nearly 500 bus routes, traveling more than 27,000 miles per day.
The mission of OSSE DOT is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services that positively support learning opportunities for eligible students from the District of Columbia. The Motor Vehicle Dispatcher is responsible for communicating with the Motor Vehicle Operators (MVO) by means of two-way radio; tracks the location, route number, and status of students on each bus; communicates information regarding students to the MVO, schools, the Parent Resource Center; alerts local and state agencies for situations needing corrective actions; and serves as a liaison between the MVO and Audit and Compliance when incidents occur on a route. The Motor Vehicle Dispatcher will report to the Customer Service Manager.
Specific functions of the Motor Vehicle Dispatcher:
The Motor Vehicle Dispatcher serves as a liaison between the Motor Vehicle Operators and transportation office(s) to monitor incidents related to school bus operations, e.g., accidents, breakdowns, etc.; informs appropriate supervisory staff of known or possible issues and provides follow-up communications. In the absence of a Terminal Manager, provides guidance and assistance to the Motor Vehicle Operators to resolve problems, in accordance with established procedures; communicates, usually by telephone, with outside local and state agencies to alert them of situations needing corrective action; receives fuel-level reports from school fueling sites and notifies appropriate agency of need for fuel; coordinates installation and repair of two-way radios on buses and/or in central offices; prepares paperwork and communicates bus radio installation and/or repair schedule, as required.
Serves as office receptionist and directs visitors and switchboard calls, taking and delivering messages as appropriate; compiles, maintains, and distributes school bus routing books and rosters of school buses and drivers for assigned office; maintains school bus driver and attendant employment records, updating data on files and/or database and as instructed, prepares personnel action forms and sends and follows through appropriate approval process; and maintains supply inventory and prepares supply orders when necessary; and provides back up support to other office staff as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position is designated as a Safety-Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable).
