Mayor Gray and OSSE Announce First-Ever D.C. College Fund

WASHINGTON, DC – Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced today that, starting this fall, D.C. students will have the opportunity to receive need-based financial support from the city government while attending colleges and universities in the District. The grants come through the inaugural Mayor’s Scholars Fund, announced at Trinity Washington University today by Mayor Gray and representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).

DC Adult Training Programs Provide Career Certification, Job Placement

WASHINGTON, DC – District of Columbia adult learners were awarded graduate certificates, trade certifications and immediate job placement in positions in the hospitality and construction industries, part of two special ceremonies conducted under an innovative partnership with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), industry employers, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations to provide industry-specific training, professional skills development and career placement for District residents.

Notice: Non-Regulatory Guidance for LEAs -- Animal Dissection

The purpose of this guidance is to provide Local education agencies (LEA) with instructions for properly implementing choice for District students in the animal dissection application within science instruction. Although schools and teachers are free to use dissection as a part of their lesson plan, LEAs may provide students who do not wish to dissect an animal for moral or religious reasons with an alternative lesson that accomplishes the same level of mastery. For additional information, please review the non-regulatory guidance for animal dissection opt-out choice for District students.

District Schools Chosen for National Wellness and Nutrition Award

Washington, DC – The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) today announced ten additional District of Columbia Schools have been honored among the healthiest nationwide as part of the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) Award Program.

WASHINGTON, DC – District of Columbia 12th Grade Students demonstrated improvements from the previous year in ACT English, Reading, Mathematics and Science benchmarks in 2012, according to Condition of College & Career Readiness, an annual report released today by ACT to provide a snapshot of the college and career readiness of ACT-tested high school seniors.
