The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is pleased to announce its Multilingual Learner Institute, “Advancing Literacy, Culture and Multilingualism,” to be held on Monday, Aug. 12 at the Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University. This convening will bring educators, researchers, and practitioners in the District of Columbia together to support multilingual learners enrolled in both English language acquisition and dual language programs.
At OSSE, we are purposeful in our efforts to hire talented professionals who are passionate about preparing students for success in college, careers and life.
We know that healthy bodies are critical for academic success. We also know that learners cannot focus on academics when they are hungry and during summer break one of their most vital needs – nutritious meals – can more easily go unmet.
OSSE is committed to continuously creating new ways to support our teachers, both in their classrooms and beyond. Our efforts are tailored to empower educators throughout the District as they cater to the needs of the thousands of students in our public schools.
Over the past three fiscal years, the District committed approximately $33 million in federal stimulus funds to expand High-Impact Tutoring programming in math and literacy.

An additional 5,200 children are newly income eligible for child care subsidies
(WASHINGTON, DC) - Today, on National Lights On Afterschool Day, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) announced $6.3 million in awards to local education agencies (LEAs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) through the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant competition. The seven awardees, located across DC, will serve 6,817 students and 2,326 of their adult family members with high-quality out-of-school time programming throughout the five-year award period.
OSSE invites instructional leaders who currently have a foundational understanding of assessment to participate in a valuable professional learning opportunity. The purpose of this cohort is to build long-term capacity in a cadre of LEA leaders who can then support teachers at their LEAs.
