Mayor Bowser Encourages College-Bound Residents to Apply for Scholarships Offered Through the DC Futures Program

Tuesday, December 27, 2022
Applications for Spring/Summer 2023 Tuition and Education Support are Open.

(Washington, DC) – With an application deadline approaching, Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging college-bound DC residents to apply for tuition and education support through the DC Futures Program, which is currently offering scholarships for the spring and summer 2023 semesters. The DC Futures Program provides eligible residents with scholarships to attend one of three approved local universities: The Catholic University of America, Trinity Washington University, or the University of the District of Columbia. The program also provides coaching support and stipends to students to address the wide range of needs that college students face. The application is open now for the spring and summer 2023 semesters. Eligible residents can apply for the program here by the deadline of Friday, January 6, 2023 by 3 pm.

“Through DC Futures, we have been able to provide more than 1,100 residents an opportunity to pursue an education that aligns with high-demand, good-paying careers throughout our city and region,” said Mayor Bowser. “DC Futures is a life-changing program – one that recognizes that being successful in college requires a range of support. For our young people who are planning their next steps and thinking about how to make their next career move, we want them to look into DC Futures and apply.”

DC Futures launched in the fall of 2021 as part of Mayor Bowser’s recovery investments in post-secondary education and is overseen by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). DC Futures provides a scholarship of up to $4,000 for a selected applicant for the spring and summer semesters, and up to $8,000 each year for a selected applicant who is pursuing their first college degree in a high-demand career field at the three partner universities. Participants must be enrolled in specific high-demand majors to be eligible.

All DC Futures participants also receive college coaching – either through DC Futures designated providers or through an approved program such as DCPS Persists. This support comes with a stipend, in addition to the scholarship; all DC Futures participants are also eligible to request up to $2,000 annually in emergency funds for unanticipated expenses.

DC Futures also provides a unique pathway for paraprofessionals and teaching aides to pursue a lead teaching role, and over 100 paraprofessionals are participating in the program, helping to grow the District’s pool of local teacher talent.

“DC residents deserve clear pathways to the middle class, and to be able to obtain an education in the city they call home. DC Futures delivers that,” said State Superintendent Dr. Christina Grant. “I’m excited to offer this opportunity to 1,500 more college-bound DC residents in 2023.”
