Today, the Bowser Administration unveiled the 2019 DC School Report Card and School Transparency and Reporting (STAR) Framework. The tool gives families and community members a common set of facts about all schools across DC and this year’s results show schools are making substantial improvements – with a greater number of schools earning higher STAR ratings.

“Last month, we learned that our public schools are the fastest improving in the nation. Now, with these report cards, families can learn more about how schools across all eight wards are making those improvements,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “The DC School Report Card is one more tool we can use to support our students and schools and ensure that families in every neighborhood have access to educational opportunities that set our young people up for success.”

Data for 2019 show that 76 public and public charter schools in DC earned 4- or 5-STAR Ratings, the highest possible ratings on the STAR Framework, up from 56 schools in 2018. More than a quarter of all schools across the city improved by one or more STAR Ratings compared to 2018. And nearly 30 percent of the schools in Wards 7 and 8 went up by one or more STAR Ratings. Every ward now has a school earning a 5-STAR Rating.

“I am proud of the progress DC is making in improving education for all students and I am proud that we are able to share transparent, and easily accessible information on what is driving that success with our families and community members,” said State Superintendent Hanseul Kang. “With more than 62,000 people using the DC School Report Card in its first year, I’m excited to know that families are digging into this wealth of data.”

The DC School Report Card and STAR Framework provides students, families, and educators more than 150 data points per school, including information about academic programs, extracurricular activities, parent/family organization, and more. Data from the DC School Report Card make it possible to identify bright spots across the city.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) launched the second annual DC All-STAR School Tour today. The tour is designed for DC school and government officials to visit, celebrate and learn best practices from public schools in DC that are showing outstanding results for students.

This year’s tour will include the following schools: Center City Public Charter School–Congress Heights, KIPP DC–Promise Academy, Kimball Elementary School, Payne Elementary School, DC Prep–Edgewood Middle School, Columbia Heights Education Campus, Truesdell Education Campus, Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School, Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts, and DC Scholars Public Charter School.

Developed by OSSE as part of federal requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the DC School Report Card and STAR Ratings can be accessed on DCSchoolReportCard.org. Families, educators, and community members are encouraged to visit the website and explore the information. The website is available in both English and Spanish, and translated guides are available in Amharic, Chinese, French, Korean, and Vietnamese.
