OSSE’s Division of Early Learning and Division of Elementary, Secondary, and Specialized Education are teaming up to host It Takes a City: DC Does it Best! This institute is for you if you are an early childhood, K-12, or adult education professional serving DC students pre-K 3 through age 22. Participants will reflect on high quality and innovative evidence- and research-based practices in education and learn new strategies for success in improving outcomes for all children in the District.
Participants can choose from over 75 breakout sessions spanning these topics:

  • Early Childhood Teaching and Learning
  • Early Childhood Health and Safety
  • Early Childhood Early Intervention
  • K-12 ELA/Literacy, Reading, and Writing Instruction

Special full-day workshop for high school science teachers

OSSE is partnering with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to host “Got Lactase? From Gene to Phenotype,” a full-day workshop for high school science teachers with a focus on rigorous, standards-aligned pedagogy. Participants will explore free resources from HHMI BioInteractive, aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), to teach concepts in genetics, natural selection, and enzymes.  Participants will receive free classroom-ready materials to enhance content knowledge and classroom practice.

This full-day workshop will take place in conjunction with the LEA Institute “It Takes a City: DC Does it Best!” on Thursday, May 25, 2017, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2660 Woodley Rd. NW. Participants of this workshop must register specifically with HHMI, and must also register for the overall LEA Institute, for which lunch will be provided.
