(Washington, DC) The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), will provide nutritious meals to youth up to age 18 and some adults with disabilities. “Come To The Table…All Summer Long!” SFSP begins June 21, 2004 providing meals free of charge throughout the summer, with an end date of August 31, 2004. Last summer nearly one million meals were served, an increase of 17 percent over 2002.
The goal of the Summer Food Service Program is to feed as many youth as possible so that “No Child Goes Hungry”. All children participating in the program are served meals free of charge, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, family responsibilities, political affiliation, disability or source of income. “While there were gains in the number of meals served last year, we need the involvement of all District of Columbia residents to spread the word about the Summer Food Service Program in their communities so that every child has an opportunity to receive free, nutritious meals all summer long,” states Dr. Cynthia Bell, Director of the Special Nutrition and Commodities Program.
Eligible organizations that can serve as SFSP sponsors or feeding sites include public or private nonprofit school food authorities, housing authorities and other units of local or municipal governments, community or faith based organizations, and public or private nonprofit day or overnight summer camps.
