Public Law 111-5, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009. Through the ARRA the District of Columbia has been awarded a one-time appropriation of $215,765 for equipment assistance grants for School Food Authorities (SFAs) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).
Due to this opportunity, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Wellness and Nutrition Services Division, will offer an opportunity for all schools participating in NSLP, to apply for grant funds through a competitive process [PDF].
The primary effect of the funds is to improve the infrastructure of NSLP, however it is important to note that authority and funds for the grants was provided in the overall context of stimulating the economy. With this in mind, the application period and subsequent notification of awards will be completed by June 1, 2009 in order to facilitate schools obligating and/or spending the funds before the end of the fiscal year.
