The DC State Board of Education Holds Vote July 15, 2009

Thursday, July 9, 2009
DCSBOE will vote on changes to the NCLB Report Card and to add biology as a graduation requirement.

Contact:  Beverley Wheeler, (202) 741-0884

DC State Board of Education (DCSBOE) will hold a public meeting to vote on the proposed changes to the NCLB report card. The DCSBOE will also vote on adding biology as a graduation requirement.

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 5:30 pm at 441 4th Street, NW, in the District of Columbia State Board of Education Chambers, located on the lobby level of the building.

The State Board has received updates on the recommended changes to the existing NCLB Report Card and on adding biology as a graduation requirement from Office of the State Superintendent of Education. The changes to the NCLB report card are to create a more accessible document for families, not to change any of the federal requirements. Adding biology as a graduation requirement will allow for US Department of Education approval of the District of Columbia’s system of standards and assessments. This approval has been pending due to a lack of policy that requires all high school students to take a science assessment.

Constituents who wish to comment at the public meeting are required to notify the State Board of Education in advance by contacting the Executive Director, Beverley Wheeler, by phone at (202) 741-0884 or by email at [email protected] before the close of business Monday, July 13, 2009. Please provide one electronic copy and bring fifteen copies to the hearing for the Board Members to view.

The meeting will air live on DSTV Comcast Channel 99 and RCN Channel 18.
