DC State Board of Education Approves Supplemental Education Service Provider Policies

Friday, June 20, 2008
Efrem Ayalew wins 2008 Benneta Bullock Washington Scholarship

The DC State Board of Education unanimously adopted a resolution approving new Supplemental Education Service (SES) Provider policies for DCPS and public charter schools at its regular monthly meeting held Wednesday, June 18.

The new SES policies outline how the District selects, monitors, and evaluate contracting agencies that provide supplemental education services to eligible students. These policies will allow for an appeals process, detail a provider code of ethics, ensure consistency in the contracting process, identify providers’ use of incentives, and outline mechanisms for parental engagement in the programs.

The policies were presented and advanced by State Superintendent of Education Deborah A. Gist. The policies were developed by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education with extensive input and participation from stakeholders within the DC SES provider community.

Additionally, the State Board awarded Efrem Ayalew the Benneta Bullock Washington Scholarship. Ayalew has recently graduated from Bell Multicultural High School and been accepted to St. Mary’s College in Maryland. Of the strongly qualified 43 applicants from across the city, Ayalew’s dedication to his current and future education and enormous contribution to his community set him apart from the others. The scholarship is awarded in honor Dr. Bullock Washington, a lifelong educator and wife of Mayor Walter Washington; the District of Columbia’s first elected mayor. The State Board heartily congratulates Ayalew for his leadership and modeling to the students of the District of Columbia.
