Thriving Together: A Symposium to Advance Social and Emotional Learning for Students and Staff
June 12, 2024
Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University
800 Florida Ave. NE, Washington, DC 20002

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is pleased to announce it will host A Symposium to Advance Social and Emotional Learning for Students and Staff, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at the Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University. This convening aims to bring together educators and stakeholders from DC Public Schools, public charter schools, and partner agencies to launch DC’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) standards. Participants will have opportunities to attend and lead skill-building workshops, network, and learn about best practices happening across the city.

The purpose of the symposium is to:

  • Increase awareness of DC’s new SEL Standards and the indicators of high-quality implementation.
  • Understand how to apply and strengthen evidence-based practices and strategies that teach and reinforce SEL competencies for both students and adults.
  • Learn how to effectively integrate SEL strategies across all school settings, including academic instruction and discipline policies and practices.
  • Develop networking opportunities among educators, support providers, and community members to share best practices and create learning communities.

This conference will feature workshops designed to teach SEL competencies while fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment. Workshops will align to one or more of the following topics:

  1. Building Foundational Support for SEL
  2. Strengthening Adult SEL through a Whole-School Approach
  3. Implementing Best Practices to Promote SEL with Students
  4. Assessing and Reflecting on SEL Data for Continuous Improvement

Priority will be given to educators and staff serving in public and public charter schools in DC. The full conference agenda, including a list of breakout sessions and presenters, is available on the Whova event app. For questions, please send an email to [email protected].
