Reimagining High School Graduation Requirements

OSSE's 2023-25 Strategic Plan identifies seven areas of focus for targeting state-led investments in recovery and restoration. They are aligned with the District’s Roadmap for Recovery. The Reimagining High School Graduation Requirements initiative is highlighted in OSSE’s Recovery to Restoration: 2023-2025 Strategic Plan as a component of the “Build Futures” strategic priority. This initiative is focused on revising the current Graduation Requirements and the creation of a DC-wide Graduate Profile.

Graduation Requirements
The aim of this initiative is to identify and implement new high school graduation requirements that incorporate outcome measures and support innovative approaches to preparing young people for life after graduation.

DC-wide Graduate Profile
The graduation requirements work is also inclusive of the development of a DC-wide Graduate Profile. The inaugural development of a DC-wide Graduate Profile will have an in-depth focus on establishing comprehensive academic, personal, and interpersonal characteristics/competencies that high school students should master in advance of graduation. Please see the DC-wide Graduate Profile and Graduation Requirements.

Community Engagement
OSSE will partner with stakeholders across the District to identify and implement new high school graduation requirements and develop the DC-wide Graduate Profile. OSSE will use the feedback from listening sessions, interviews, and surveys to develop drafts of the graduation requirements and DC-wide Graduate Profile.

Call for Public Feedback on High School Graduation Requirements  
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is soliciting feedback on the District’s current high school graduation requirements as part of the Reimagining High School Graduation Requirements initiative. 

This work is inclusive of the development and implementation of revised high school graduation requirements that support innovative approaches to preparing young people for life after graduation. 

An essential component of the work is hearing from District stakeholders on what students should know and be able to do by the time they graduate from high school, as well as gather feedback on the current high school graduation requirements. To provide feedback, please complete the following form: OSSE Reimagining High School Graduation Requirements Public Feedback Form.   

OSSE will also hold public feedback sessions to hear directly from community members regarding the District’s high school graduation requirements. If you are interested in participating, please sign-up below.
