SOAR Act Teacher Pipeline grants are available through a competitive process. Eligible applicants include public charter local education agencies (LEAs) and nonprofit organizations with a demonstrated history of success working with DC charter schools on projects designed to impact the quality and quantity of the teacher supply for DC charter schools. Teacher pipeline projects are initiatives that a) recruit high-quality candidates new to teaching for DC charter school teacher residency or teacher roles, and b) train and/or certify these teachers. All projects should be designed to have direct and rapid impact on academic achievement and outcomes for students.

Project Descriptions

AppleTree Institute

AppleTree Institute will implement its Teacher Residency Program, which recruits early childhood educators to work in four public charter LEAs with predominantly high-need populations. The program provides hands-on practice, real-time feedback, peer learning and an opportunity to earn a master's degree in two years.

Friendship PCS

Friendship PCS will partner with Relay Graduate School of Education to train and prepare ten black male teacher residents (BMTR) recruited for Friendship's BMTR Program for teaching certification. Residents will participate in Relay's Master of Arts in Teaching while gaining teaching experience in a Friendship PCS classroom.

KIPP DC PCS

KIPP DC will partner with nine public charter LEAs to implement their Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) program, which is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for new teachers to develop into outstanding educators.

Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS

For their FY22 awarded project, Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS will partner with Dual Language Education of New Mexico and Educational Solutions for Children to implement their Instituto Mundo Verde program. This program will train high-quality candidates for hard-to-staff positions at schools with bilingual education programs and/or with large numbers of English learners, working in partnership with national experts in bilingual education and dual language learning practices.

For their FY20 continuation project, Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS will partner with Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), Educational Solutions for Children, and Urban Teacher Center to recruit and train high-quality candidates new to teaching in charter schools with bilingual education programs and/or with large numbers of English learners, working in partnership with national experts in bilingual education, local bilingual schools and organizations that recruit teachers.

Relay Graduate School of Education

Relay Graduate School of Education (RelayGSE) will partner with two public charter LEAs to conduct their teacher residency program. RelayGSE is an accredited, nonprofit graduate school of education committed to serving high-need students. They serve pre-K through grade 12 teachers in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies based on local need through a residency program in which teachers are responsible for the learning of all students.

Urban Teacher Center

Urban Teachers will partner with five partner public charter LEAs to recruit and train at least 35 teaching residents in special and general education (elementary, secondary math or secondary ELA).
