OSSE invites all District educators to participate in its upcoming English Language Acquisition workshop series. This three-part series is designed to share foundational information about English language acquisition, from an introduction to language acquisition to useful classroom strategies that can help English learners (ELs) access the academic curriculum. The three-part workshop series will include:
- English Language Acquisition 101: Introduction to Language Acquisition: Implications for the Classroom;
- English Language Acquisition 102: Language Levels, Language Objectives, and Lesson Planning; and
- English Language Acquisition 103: Strategies for Comprehensible Input.
English Language Acquisition 101: Introduction to Language Acquisition—Implications for the Classroom
The 101 workshop is designed for any educator who is interested in understanding the basics about how ELs learn English. Specifically, participants will learn about:
- Different types of ELs
- How second language acquisition happens
- Differences between social language and academic language
- Developmental milestones that correspond to each stage of second language acquisition.
Please note: instructional strategies will not be covered in the 101 course.
General and special educators, specials teachers, related service providers, coaches, and administrators are strongly encouraged to attend. English Language Acquisition 101 will take place on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at OSSE, First Floor, Eleanor Holmes Norton III (Room 110). This session will repeat on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, 12:30-4 p.m. at OSSE, Fourth Floor, Bill Nye Conference Room 422. Space is limited and priority registration will be given to individuals with little to no background in second language acquisition.

English Language Acquisition 102: Language Levels, Language Objectives, and Lesson Planning
The next workshop in the series is English Language Acquisition 102: Language Levels, Language Objectives, and Lesson Planning. This workshop will guide participants in preparing to instruct their ELs. This workshop will cover:
- The characteristics of English language production at each of the six WIDA English language proficiency levels;
- The components of a Model Performance Indicator; and
- How to craft a language objective.
This workshop will take place on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, 12:30-4 p.m. and will repeat on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Both sessions are at OSSE, First Floor, Eleanor Holmes Norton II (Room 109). Space is limited and priority registration will be given to those who attended the English Language Acquisition 101 workshop held in September 2019.

English Language Acquisition 103: Strategies for Comprehensible Input
The final workshop in the series is English Language Acquisition 103: Strategies for Comprehensible Input. This workshop will guide participants in classroom strategies to instruct their ELs using the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) method of comprehensible input instruction. The workshop will cover:
- The premise and usefulness of comprehensible input teaching methods like CALLA;
- The components of a CALLA lesson; and
- How to craft your own CALLA lesson.
Please note: Participants are expected to bring a lesson plan they have executed or will execute.
This workshop will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, 12:30-4 p.m. and will repeat on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2018, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Both sessions will take place at OSSE, Eleanor Holmes Norton II (Room 109). Space is limited and priority registration will be given to those who attended English Language Acquisition 101 and/or 102. General and special educators, specials teachers, related service providers, coaches, and administrators are strongly encouraged to attend.
