OSSE Releases ESEA Draft Application for Public Comment

Washington, DC --  To solicit public comment, opinion and insights from key constituents including Local Education Agencies, Schools, Parents, Teachers, Community Members, Elected officials and District stakeholders committed to education, today the Office of the State Superintendent of Education released its initial draft of The District’s federal waiver request to the US Department of Education for flexibility regarding the implementation of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) – most commonly known as No Child Left Behind.

OSSE Announces Enhanced Test Security Measures for DC Public Schools and Charters

Washington, DC: To ensure the validity of 2011 District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC CAS) results, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) today issued a Request for Proposal soliciting vendors to investigate and assess individual classrooms. The announcement comes as State Superintendent of Education Hosanna Mahaley introduces a series of recommendations and procedures aimed at improving testing protocols across the District and strengthening the validity and reliability of test investigations.

DC State Board of Education Holds Public Meeting on Global Education Policies and Initiatives in the Public Education System

Washington, DC – The District of Columba State Board of Education (DCSBOE) will hold a public meeting on recommendations to revise the high school graduation requirements for global education.  The board will receive recommendations from a panel led by Ms. Sally Schwartz of the DC Center for Global Education and Leadership. 

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 5:30 pm at 441 4th Street, NW, in the Old Council Chambers, located on the lobby level of the building.

DC PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLLMENT UP FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

Based on preliminary un-audited data, current enrollment in DC public schools (District of Columbia Public Schools and Public Charter Schools) is up 4% from last year to 78,200, and numbers have been steadily increasing over the past three years—a 2% increase in 2009 and a 3.6% increase in 2010. In 2011 DCPS enrollment increased by 1%, from 45,631 to 46,191 (560 students), and PCS enrollment increased by 9%, from 29,366 to 32,009 (2,643 students).

DC State Board of Education Holds Public Meeting on Science Graduation Requirements for High School Students

Washington, DC – The District of Columba State Board of Education (DCSBOE) will hold a public meeting on recommendations to revise the science requirements needed to obtain a high school diploma in the District of Columbia Public Education System.  In addition, the State Board of Education will recognize Shira Fishman of McKinley Technology High School who recently won the 2011 Milken Educator Award.  Ms. Fishman is in her seventh year of teaching and serves as the Math Department Chair at McKinley Technology High School.
