SEL Standards Development Timeline
As part of OSSE's 2023-25 Strategic Plan, OSSE developed K-12 Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Standards. Through this process, various collaborative efforts were conducted; including writing groups, focus groups, in-person and virtual feedback engagements, and a survey. Drafting of the SEL standards, along with goals and age-appropriate indicators, was a collaborative effort between OSSE and national social and emotional learning experts, with technical support from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
The standards will be developed across the following timeline:
- September – November 2022: SEL Landscape Analysis
- December – February 2023: OSSE joins CASEL Collaborative State Initiative (CSI)
- March – May 2023: SEL Market Research
- June 2023: SEL Stakeholder SCAN Analysis
- July – September 2023: Standards Framework, Internal and External Groups Established
- October – December 2023: Draft Standards Developed and Written
- December 2023: Public Comment Window Opens
- December 2023 – January 2024: Virtual and In-person Public Engagements & Feedback
- January 2024: Public Comment Window Closes
- February – April 2024: Standards Draft Revisions with Public Feedback
- May 2024: Adopt and Publish Finalized SEL Standards
- 2024 – 25 School Year: DC Local Education Agencies (LEAs) Implement SEL Standards
