Nonpublic Placement Information for LEAs

Nonpublic Toolkits

The District of Columbia Nonpublic School Toolkit is a comprehensive guide which contains information to assist educators in effectively addressing the needs of students enrolled and enrolling in nonpublic schools or transitioning to a less restrictive environment (LRE) from a nonpublic school. This guide was developed using federal and District of Columbia policies, procedures and regulations.

The District of Columbia Least Restrictive Environment Toolkit is a comprehensive guide which contains information and best practices to ensure that students with disabilities receive an excellent education.

Additionally, this guide was developed to provide District of Columbia LEAs and other providers that serve District students with a framework to improve their inclusionary practices and effectively serve all District students.

This publication has been developed pursuant to the guidelines of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004) and the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations - Chapter 30 (DCMR) - and may be reprinted without permission.

Policies

On Jan. 5, 2010 OSSE issued the “Polies and Procedures for Placement Review (PPPR), Revised.” The policy clarifies the roles and responsibilities of LEA that is considering a change in placement for a child with a disability to a more restrictive environment outside the LEA. OSSE’s placement review guidance provides additional information.

Training Resources

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, OSSE hosted a least restrictive environment (LRE) webinar on serving students with disabilities. This goal of this training was to ensure that LEAs understand LRE requirements and provide strategies for maintaining students in their LRE. These slides are for training purposes only.
