GED Scoring Changes

On April 8, 2016, OSSE accepted GED Testing Service’s recommended changes to the scoring framework associated with the GED® test. Consequently, the passing score for each of the GED® subject tests is now 145. This change was implemented in 2016 and applies retroactively to all tests taken since Jan. 1, 2014.

Establishment of the DC State High School Diploma

Adding to the excitement of the GED scoring change is the fact that passing the GED in DC now results in the granting of a State High School Diploma rather than the GED credential!

The State Diploma will be awarded to all future GED passers as well as any DC resident who has passed the GED since Jan. 1, 2014. The State Diploma is recognized as the equivalent to the high school diploma and bears the signature and seal of the State Superintendent of Education. This important step was taken to more accurately and appropriately recognize the level of rigor of the new GED and the dedication, hard work, and demonstration of skill it takes for residents to successfully complete this alternative path to a high school diploma. The creation of the State Diploma is an example of the District’s commitment to expanding pathways to the middle class and will provide an excellent opportunity to pursue postsecondary education and training; better careers; and greater earning potential.

If you have any questions about these changes or how to get started, please contact OSSE’s GED Program Office at (202) 274-7173.
