Beginning Oct. 31, 2026, and by Oct. 31 of each year thereafter, DC Public Schools and each public charter local education agency (LEA) shall send a letter to OSSE reporting whether each school under the LEA's authority has complied with the requirements of subsection (a) of this section by Oct. 5 of the reporting year.
On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, OSSE and DC Health held a technical assistance webinar on implementing the School Year 2026-27 School Immunization Policy. The webinar covered October key dates for the current school year, performing immunization data entry and retrieval, sending warning notifications of temporary exclusion to all families of noncompliant students in key grades, and potential vaccine opportunities.

OSSE is required by the federal government to make school improvement designations on a regular basis using our statewide accountability system, which we run every fall. We use school performance metrics with different weights to calculate overall school accountability scores for elementary, middle, high, and alternative schools.
In October 2024, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) announced that it was updating its alternative accountability system to ensure that the unique populations and missions of the District’s alternative schools are recognized and supported. OSSE is federally required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to measure the performance of all public schools in the District of Columbia – regardless of the school’s sector and students served.
