OSSE Engages District Residents on the DC School Report Card

In December 2023, OSSE announced the launch of the new DC School Report Card site at schoolreportcard.dc.gov. The redesigned website shares education data from the 2022-23 school year on attendance, student growth, graduation and much more. OSSE is excited about the release of the 2023 DC School Report Card, but we know the work isn’t done!

Earlier in the fall 2023, OSSE began engaging with stakeholders to understand what enhancements can be made for future iterations of the DC School Report Card. This public engagement follows up with work done in 2018 when the DC School Report Card was first being designed. This current round of engagement focused on three main areas:

  • What content should be featured on the DC School Report Card
  • How the summative score should be presented on the DC School Report Card
  • What the format and visual elements should be on the DC School Report Card

OSSE’s engagement work began with engaging both our Teacher and Principal Advisory Committees during their kick-off meeting in October 2023. We were excited to hear from a number of great educators and school leaders and see them engaged in meaningful conversations around the purpose of the report card, how and where to display data, and suggestions on data points to include or remove.

In partnership with the DC State Board of Education (SBOE), we also facilitated engagement sessions both virtually and in-person. These sessions offered a great opportunity for both OSSE and the SBOE to hear directly from stakeholders. We held three separate engagement sessions, with each one focused on a different topic. These sessions were collectively attended by 75 people.

OSSE also engaged with parents, students, teachers and school leaders at EdFEST during two events in December 2023 Through two quick questions and a pick-what-you-like activity, OSSE was able to engage with stakeholders about what data points they want to see prominently displayed on the DC School Report Card and which graphical representation of the summative score was most preferred. Our engagement led to more than 400 sticker dots collected!

The OSSE engages with the public at EdFEST, including favorite potential future displays of the summative school accountability score.

At the start of our engagement period, OSSE co-created a survey with the SBOE r to gather feedback from those not able to attend engagement sessions of EdFEST. The survey was open from Sept. 26 – Dec. 12, 2023. We exceeded our goal of getting feedback from at least 100 individuals; the survey received 136 completed responses resulting in nearly 900 pieces of feedback related to content, presentation of the summative score, or format and visual elements.

OSSE is now working on aggregating the feedback and data from our various engagement sessions. We will continue our work with SBOE on developing a plan on how the DC School Report Card will be updated in December 2024 and beyond.

As OSSE wraps this portion of our engagement work on the DC School Report Card, we would like to share our thanks to those who provided us feedback and engaged with us on this topic. We value the thoughts, opinions, and suggestions from our community to improve the DC School Report Card!
