The Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE’s) vision is that DC learners of all ages and backgrounds are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue and thrive on the life path of their choice. In line with our vision, OSSE supports local education agencies (LEAs) by developing policies and guidance.
The rapid advancement of digital technology in the 21st century presents unique challenges and opportunities for our schools. This webpage is a collection of resources curated by OSSE to help District education stakeholders best support their communities when considering the intersection of digital technology and education.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Work
OSSE created a LEA AI Model Policy for Staff Use to help local education agencies (LEAs) think through staff-facing use cases of generative AI. This policy is not legal advice nor is it required to be adopted.
OSSE created this policy after seeing survey results from LEA leaders about the state of AI use at their schools. OSSE administered this survey in February 2026. In the survey, LEAs ranked “Model policies or guidance on AI for instructional use” as the most useful support that OSSE could provide. OSSE is adding two new AI professional development opportunities to OSSE’s Learning Management System platform for DC educators to support them in using AI responsibly in their instructional planning. The courses, AI Literacy for Educators, and, Instructional Decision-Making and AI Dilemmas, will be available to educators in the coming weeks.

Personal Wireless Communication Devices
The following materials have been assembled by OSSE to support District schools in managing personal wireless communications devices, most commonly cell phones, in their learning environments.
OSSE’s Model Personal Device Policy: Required by the Disconnect Act of 2025, this model policy is designed to help guide LEAs as they develop legally-compliant personal device policies for their school communities.
