What's New in 2023
- Dyslexia Legislation requirement for all LEAs to ensure that schools take the Dyslexia Awareness Module.
Four Things to Know
Addressing Dyslexia and Other Reading Difficulties Amendment Act of 2020, effective March 16, 2021, requires OSSE to:
- Provide dyslexia awareness and other reading difficulties training to all educators.
- Provide K-2 educators with professional development on recognizing reading difficulties, screening for reading difficulties, and implementing instruction that meet the needs of students with reading difficulties.
- Compile a list of recommended screening instruments and protocols that LEAs may use to identify students who are at risk of reading difficulties.
- Provide guidance on specialized, multi-tiered remediation and intervention instruction which is aligned to a science-based reading program.
Key Dates and Deadlines
In fall 2022, OSSE launched the Dyslexia Awareness Modules. These modules are available in OSSE's Learning Management System (LMS). All DC educators are required to complete these modules. These course modules are virtual, asynchronous and take approximately 2-3 hours to complete.
Dates
LEAs will be required to report on completion of this course for all educators as part of the mandated annual compliance reporting.
- By Oct. 31: DCPS must submit a letter to OSSE regarding compliance with legislation.
- By Oct. 31: All public charter LEAs must submit a letter to the Public Charter School Board (PCSB) regarding compliance with legislation.
- By Nov. 15: PCSB must submit a copy of each letter from public charter LEAs to OSSE.
- Within 10 business days of Nov. 15: OSSE shall make all compliance letters from DCPS and PCSB publicly available.
