School-Based COVID-19 Testing Data

Purpose:

Routine asymptomatic testing for coronavirus (COVID-19), along with COVID-19 vaccination and robust health and safety protocols, create a web of supports that ensures the safest possible environment for students, staff and families. Access to COVID-19 testing has also been a leading strategy to build confidence among school communities that schools remain safe.

All DC Public Schools (DCPS) schools and many public charter schools participate in the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE’s) centralized asymptomatic screening testing program, which is intended to help schools maintain an understanding of the prevalence of COVID-19 in the school population and quickly identify and isolate COVID-19 positive individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends testing at least 10 percent of the school population to achieve the public health goals of an asymptomatic screening program. OSSE will continue the Shield T3 centralized asymptomatic testing program at participating DCPS and charter schools weekly through the end of the school year. Charter schools have the option to continue operating their own testing programs

DC public charter schools may elect to implement and manage COVID-19 asymptomatic testing programs that best support the needs of their school communities. The reports from these schools are included here when that data is reported to OSSE and to the extent that it is reported.

This data reflects the percentage of weekly asymptomatic COVID-19 student tests completed based on each school’s enrollment and reflects all available testing participation outcomes from the previous week.
  • The number of student asymptomatic COVID-19 tests completed is calculated from the total number of COVID-19 tests completed at each school and adjusted to exclude staff or symptomatic tests.
  • Each school’s enrollment is obtained from a standard OSSE enrollment database source and is calculated weekly.
  • Overall Percent Participation is calculated using the data from all schools that participated in asymptomatic testing in the previous week.
The information shared here represents all available information at the time of reporting.
