About the Dashboard 

OSSE’s attendance dashboard shows citywide and school-level data on how often students are missing instructional time because they are absent—whether absences are excused or unexcused—across DC public and public charter schools. With more data that is shared more often, OSSE seeks to help families, educators, community members, and District leaders better understand attendance patterns across schools and over time. 

Use the dashboard below to view chronic absenteeism and chronic truancy rates for public and public charter schools in the District of Columbia.  For instructions on how to use the dashboard, please consult this user guide. 

 

What to Know About the Data 

The dashboard is updated monthly. It shows data from the beginning of the school year as of the pull date listed on the Overview page. The pull date is the date OSSE collected the data shown in the dashboard. 

The dashboard does not update in real time. Local education agencies, or LEAs, may update their attendance data during the school year. Those changes will appear in the next scheduled dashboard update. Because the dashboard is updated monthly, the information shown may be different from what a school or LEA sees in its own live system on a given day. 

Definitions 

Chronic absenteeism 
A student is chronically absent when they miss 10 percent or more of the school days they are enrolled, for any reason. 

Chronic truancy 
A student is chronically truant when they have 10 or more unexcused full-day absences during the school year. 

Pull date 
The pull date is the date OSSE collected the data shown in the dashboard. 

LEA 
LEA stands for local education agency. In DC, this includes DCPS and public charter school LEAs. 

Privacy  
The dashboard shows grouped data only. It does identify individual students.
