The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is pleased to announce its multilingual learner conference, “Strengthening Teaching Practices for Multilingual Learners Together,” held on May 25-26, 2021. This virtual conference will feature educators sharing their programs and practices for English learners and multilingual learners in both English language and dual language programs. This convening is geared toward all DC educators who work with students who are English learners in in-person, distance learning, and hybrid learning environments.
The conference will provide DC educators the opportunity to:
- Share their skills teaching English learners and multilingual learners;
- Learn from peers regarding effective practices for teaching multilingual learners;
- Increase their use of collaborative practices to serve multilingual learners; and
- Create their vision for success for multilingual learners in DC.
The 2021 Multilingual Learner Conference will be a virtual event, featuring seven sessions designed to support ESL and Dual Language programs. The conference presentations will:
- Be created by DC educators for DC educators;
- Focus on diverse learning environments;
- Embrace the cultural and linguistical diversity of English learners and multilingual learners in DC;
- Model key strategies for English language development and biliteracy;
- Provide an opportunity to share your knowledge; and
- Be a celebration for DC leaders and educators!
This conference aims to further OSSE’s vision for success for English learners:
- All English learners (ELs) will have equitable, meaningful access to high-quality academic and linguistic programs in an inclusive, welcoming environment.
- Schools will include EL students specifically as a valued part of their vision for the school and students' success.
- Schools will provide high-quality education that equips ELs with the knowledge and skills necessary for language proficiency, grade-level content mastery, higher education, and career readiness.
- Schools will continuously evaluate and improve programs for ELs in partnership with key stakeholders.
Participants will receive OSSE professional learning units (PLUs) upon full attendance and completion of the conference survey for each session attended.
