OSSE Requests Nominations for the 2012 District of Columbia History Teacher of the Year
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (GLIAH) is seeking nominations for the annual National History Teacher of the Year Award. The National History Teacher of the Year is chosen from outstanding history teachers in each state, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and Department of Defense Schools. Nominations for the District of Columbia History Teacher of the Year (DCHTOY) can be made by a student, parent, colleague, principal or school administrator familiar with the teacher’s work. If you would like to nominate a history teacher who meets the criteria listed below, please visit the GLIAH website no later than 5:00pm on February 1, 2012 to complete an online application. All nominees will be contacted by GLIAH with further instructions on submitting supporting materials. Self-nominations are not accepted, and past state and national winners are not eligible. This award is co-sponsored by GLIAH, HISTORY® (History Channel), and Preserve America. State winners are awarded $1,000 and the winner’s school receives an archive of books and other resources. The winner of the DCHTOY will be included in the competition for the National History Teacher of the Year who will be awarded a $10,000 prize.
- Must be a full-time educator of grades 7-12 who teaches American history (including state and local history).
- Must have at least three years of classroom teaching experience.
- Must demonstrate commitment to teaching American history (including state and local history).
- Must possess evidence of creativity and innovation in the classroom.
- Must demonstrate effective use of documents, artifacts, historic sites, oral histories, and other primary resources to engage students with American history.
Nominees must be planning to teach for at least one year following the award year.
