Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Focus Group

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) require the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) and schools to work together to assist youth with disabilities in gaining skills and experiences that will prepare them for future post-school employment. .  On June 24, 2015, OSSE and RSA are hosting a focus group at OSSE, 810 First St. NE, Washington, DC 20002 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Room 806 A/B, to provide a forum for schools to:

  • Learn more about current youth-focused employment policies and initiatives;
  • Discuss ways in which OSSE and RSA can support schools in preparing students for employment;
  • Identify barriers to accessing RSA services; and
  • Suggest potential partnerships to increase awareness and family engagement.

Homeschool Notification Due Date

Parents must submit their online Homeschool Notification Form for the 2015-16 School Year on or before the August 15 notification date.  The online notification may be found at http://osse.dc.gov/service/dc-homeschooling-program.

Each month, OSSE DOT recognizes one exemplary bus driver and attendant from each of its four bus terminals in DC (5th Street, Adams Place, New York Avenue and Southwest) as part of the division’s Recognition Program for Bus Drivers and Attendants of Special Education Students.

The drivers and attendants have been identified by DC parents, students, teachers and school staff as outstanding stewards of the community. Since the program’s launch in May 2014, OSSE DOT has received over 700 online and mail-in nominations for DC bus drivers and attendants. Nominations are accepted year-long and counted the first Tuesday of every month. Recognize your school bus driver and attendant today!

Who should participate?  In accordance with the McKinney Vento Homeless Education Act, LEAs must collaborate and coordinate with community and school personnel responsible for the provision of education and related services to children and youth in homeless situations. You are encouraged to participate and to invite LEA administrators, social workers, liaisons, counselor and others (ex:  homeless families) responsible for coordinating services to ensure that homeless children and youth enroll in school and have the opportunity to succeed academically.  For complete webinar descriptions, or to register for any of these webinars, please visit http://center.serve.org/nche/web/group.php.

Now Accepting Applications for the Dual Enrollment Partnership Grant

OSSE is excited to announce that the Dual Enrollment Partnership Grant application is now open. This grant competition funds partnering Local Education Agencies (LEA) and Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) providing dual enrollment programming to eligible students in the District during the 2015-2016 academic year.  Awards will be up to $250 per student per course to cover books, fees, and transportation. The application is available on OSSE’s EGMS website. OSSE will hold two pre-application webinars to answer questions about the application on Friday May 29th from 3:00-4:00pm and Wednesday June 17th from 11:00am- 12:00pm.  Please email Mike Andrews, Program Manager, with questions. Applications are due by 5:00pm EST on July 15, 2015.

Farm Field Trip Grant SY15-16

On May 8, 2015 the NOFA for the Farm Field Trip Grant SY15-16 was released in the DC Register. The application will be available through the Enterprise Grants Management System starting on May 22, 2015 and a copy of the Request for Applications will be available for viewing on the Farm to School service page of OSSE’s website. All applications must be submitted through the Enterprise Grants Management System.

Registration Open! Federal Grants Management Conference

OSSE is pleased to announce the opening of registration for its annual Federal Grants Management Conference. The conference, sponsored by OSSE’s Office of Grants Management and Compliance (OGMC), will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2015, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at Gallaudet University.         

The conference will address issues related to:

  • the federal grants management process;
  • available funding opportunities and resources;
  • basic grants management; and
  • procurement.

These topics and more will be discussed during the conference.
