Overview
The Adult and Family Education unit supports eligible providers (community-based organizations and local education agencies) by re-granting federal and local funds to support Integrated Education and Training (IE&T) which includes Adult Education and Literacy, Workforce Preparation, Workforce Training and Digital Literacy/Digital Skills Training (IE&T+D).
Funds allow local IE&T providers to help District residents –
- Make measurable skills gains (including educational functioning level gains or acquire a DC State Diploma or High School Diploma),
- Aquire and/or enhance their basic digital literacy skills,
- Transition to postsecondary education or training,
- Earn postsecondary education credentials and industry recognized certifications,
- Enter employment to earn family sustaining wages,
- Pursue a career path and advance in their careers, and
- Make progress toward the achievement of self-sufficiency.
These providers prepare District residents for careers in DC’s high-demand industries:
- Business and Office Administration,
- Construction,
- Education,
- Healthcare,
- Hospitality, Retail, Tourism, and Entertainment,
- Information Technology,
- Security and Law Enforcement, and
- Transportation, Infrastructure and Utilities.

The Adult and Family Education unit also facilitates state leadership activities including professional development, technical assistance and monitoring; provides resources (software, instructional materials, equipment, and assistive technology) to adult education providers and partners in the city; and maintains and reports state and local program performance, progress and outcome data to the U.S. Department of Education, city officials, and other stakeholders.
