Today the District of Columbia received approval from the US Department of Education to continue implementation of its Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility waiver through school year 2017-18. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) submitted an amended ESEA flexibility waiver application on behalf of the District of Columbia in March 2015.

“This approval will help continue the progress we’ve made in the last several years,” said State Superintendent Hanseul Kang, “and we look forward to ongoing collaboration with parents, educators, community members, the State Board of Education, and local education leaders to continually refine our efforts to support the District’s students to be ready for success in college, careers, and life.”

The three-year renewal of the District’s flexibility waiver, achieved through collaboration between the OSSE and the State Board of Education, will allow for its continued implementation through the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Implementation of the ESEA flexibility waiver to date has supported DC’s efforts to adopt and implement new academic standards and rigorous assessments aligned to college- and career-ready expectations in English language arts, mathematics, and science.

OSSE’s renewal request reflects an effort to provide continuing and expanded supports to meet the needs of students and educators. Through DC’s new State System of Support, an advanced local education agency (LEA) support model, OSSE will be better positioned to deliver targeted professional development differentiated to educators’ needs.
