DC State Board of Education Reviews Requirements for Physical Education

Honors 2012 Teacher of the Year Perea Brown-Blackmon and 2011 DC History Teacher of the Year Lisa Jensen

Washington, DC – The District of Columba State Board of Education (DCSBOE) will review recommendations to the high school physical and health education graduation requirements.  The suggestions for board deliberation in the subject area include:

  • Increasing PE/Health unit requirements for graduation,
  • Spreading units over multiple years,
  • Proposing adjuncts to school-based instruction for meeting physical activity needs, and
  • Ensuring all schools have qualified physical education instructors on staff and access to content that promotes learning.

The board would also like to receive public input as to whether participation in a varsity sport should contribute to course accumulation.

In addition to reviewing physical and health education graduation requirements, the DC State Board of Education will honor Perea Brown-Blackmon as the 2012 Teacher of the Year and Lisa Jensen as the 2011 DC History Teacher of the Year.

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. at 441 4th Street, NW, in the Old Council Chambers, located on the lobby level of the building.

Constituents who wish to comment at the meeting are required to notify the staff in advance by contacting the Office of the DC State Board of Education by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by e-mail at sboe@dc.gov.  Please provide one electronic copy in advance and bring fifteen copies to the hearing for the State Board members to view.

The meeting will air live on District Knowledge Network (DKN) Comcast Channel 99, RCN Channel 18, and Fios Channel 12.
