Formative assessment or diagnostic testing is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures employed by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student achievement. Starting in 2014-2015, OSSE plans to offer optional formative assessments aligned to next generation assessment content, free of charge to schools.
PARCC is currently developing diagnostic and midyear formative assessments and K-1 formative tasks that will be aligned to the PARCC summative assessments, which educators can tailor and use on demand. As part of the next generation science and health assessments, OSSE will also be working to develop aligned non-summative assessments that educators can use on demand. OSSE is also working with the PARCC consortium and with the vendors developing the science and health assessment to ensure that schools and LEAs receive useful data reports and reporting tools that educators can use to improve and refine instruction.
