The McKinney-Vento (MKV) Grant Program is a federally funded program authorized by Title VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, Section 726, and was reauthorized on Dec. 10, 2015 by Title IX, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) made effective on Oct. 1, 2016. Each year OSSE’s Homeless Education Program holds a competition for eligible local education agencies (LEAs) serving students experiencing homelessness in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 within the District of Columbia.
The intent of the MKV competitive grant is to provide supplemental funding to help:
- Facilitate the identification, enrollment, attendance, and success in school of homeless children and youth; and
- Ensure homeless children and youth have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education as provided to all other students.
OSSE’s Homeless Education Program will issue a Request for Applications (RFA) for the FY 2021 MKV Homeless Assistance Grant Program competition in the spring/summer of 2020.
