Summer Meals Sponsors for Unaffiliated Sites

How to Become a SFSP Site this Summer

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), known in Washington, DC as the DC Free Summer Meals Program (FSMP), provides reimbursement to organizations for serving free nutritious meals and snacks served to children 18 and younger. These meals help to keep children nourished when school is out and provides the nutrition they need to continue to learn, play, and grow during the summer months. If your organization is interested in operating as a participating meal site under another organization’s Sponsorship, please read the following below:

What is a Site:
A site is the physical location, approved by the State agency, where you will serve meals during a specified time period during the summer.

Who Can Become a Site:
Any organization that does not have the financial or administrative ability to run the summer program at their location, but has the ability to supervise meal services for children as well as provide some recreational or enrichment activities, may be a site. Meal service sites may be located in a variety of settings; including schools, recreation centers, playgrounds, parks, churches, community centers, day camps, residential summer camps, housing projects, migrant centers, or on Indian reservations.

If you supervise a site, you will:

  • Attend your sponsor's training
  • Supervise activities and meal service at your site
  • Manage volunteers
  • Distribute meals by following SFSP guidelines
  • Keep daily records of meals served
  • Store food appropriately
  • Keep the site clean and sanitary
  • Help your sponsor promote the program in the community
