The Office of the State Superintendent Education (OSSE) is hosting the Annual Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) training on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. This is a mandatory training for all participating sponsors who are public or private nonprofit school food authority; a public or private nonprofit college or university; a public or private nonprofit residential summer camp; a unit of local, county, municipal, state, or federal government; or any other type of private non-profit organization. In order to receive reimbursement, applicants must apply and receive approval from OSSE.

The annual training will consist of an overview of program administration, best practices, and regulatory compliance in accordance with US Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines.

The USDA Summer Food Service Program is administered by OSSE. The State Agency provides reimbursement for free meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines served to children age 18 and younger. During non-school periods meal distribution through the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program decreases. Due to families' limited budgets, or other circumstances, children will often miss wholesome meals. The Summer Food Service Program was established to fill this hunger gap and ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.

OSSE believes in the potential of all DC students, from our infants and toddlers all the way to our adult learners, to learn and achieve at high levels. We believe that a critical part of our role as the state education agency is in ensuring greater equity in outcomes for our students, by accelerating progress for those who are furthest behind.
