Continuous Education Resources for Educators and Families

What is Continuous Education?

Continuous education takes place when both instruction and learning occur seamlessly across different learning environments, including in-person and remote settings. It requires the development of a coherent and thoughtful plan to ensure that students experience the equivalent levels of rigor and quality, whether engaged in full-time distance learning, full-time in-person learning, or in a hybrid or blended approach, alternating between remote and in-person environments. Continuous education also includes periods of emergency when distance learning may be required for all students.

Continuous Education Resource Guide

The purpose of this resource guide is to provide educators with resources that support continuous education and distance learning. This is not meant to serve as an exhaustive list, but to provide curated resources with guidance addressing how to provide students low-tech and high-tech supports across different content areas. Each section provides:

  • Key questions,
  • Resources to address each question, and
  • Guidance on how to apply the resources to practice.

Resources target both teachers’ planning and instructional delivery as well as partnering with families as they guide their student(s) in remote learning. Teacher-Created Packets: School building are closed, but learning activities are being provided for students. These learning activities are primarily parent/guardian supported. How are you selecting or designing the materials for the packets? Share My Lesson Share My Lesson provides a space for teachers to post and share lessons they have developed. The site now includes a forum focused on sharing lessons in light of the coronavirus outbreak and supporting the transition to online or blended learning.
Are the materials being provided accessible to all students? UDL for Distance Learning Understood.org has provided resources to support best practices for online learning that are based on the Universal Design for Learning model.
Adaptive Worksheets This site allows parents and teachers to create their own worksheets or print existing worksheets. The resources linked here are free.

How can I Help Families Support Students’ Remote Learning?

Home Habits: Healthy routines can help students with the transition to remote learning, and families can support their students to set up and maintain these routines. How can I help my child to be ready for distance learning? Make a schedule. Most kids are used to having a schedule for the school day, so recreating something similar at home can ease the transition to a different learning environment.
Build-in breaks and provide physical activities. Traditional school programs incorporate some sort of recess or outdoor time, and a work from home schedule should be no different. Outside time and fresh air have huge physical and mental health benefits.
Get crafty. Art is an important part of education and working with your children at home also provides parents with an opportunity to get creative with the arts.
Stick to a sleep schedule. While it might be tempting for your older children to stay up late every night and sleep late every morning, changing healthy sleep habits is not beneficial to their physical and mental health.

How can I Help Multilingual Families Support Students’ Remote Learning?

Multilingual Family Supports: Partner with families and leveraging linguistic and cultural assets to support students’ remote learning. How do I know what my child will do, learn, and practice during distance learning if I don’t speak English? Stay connected with your school to understand what their plan is for instruction during your child's time at home, in addition to the technology needs you may need to consider.

Call your child’s teacher or school to receive information about the procedures, dates, and times for conferencing.

Make sure to save the teacher’s email or another communication channel available.

How can I support my children to express their feelings and emotions during distance learning? Provide a journal or notebook to your child. Writing, sketching, or drawing in a journal helps students to process their feelings in this uncertain time. You can set aside a time to talk as a family about how everyone is feeling and coping with the outbreak.
What do I do to check my child’s work if I don’t speak English? Most online classes aren't a virtual meeting. There are lists of assignments, discussion boards, forums, and projects that are accomplished at the student's own pace. Your child is not in the same room as the teacher. Don't think you must be in the same room as your child or speak English to help.

You can set a time to talk about what content and/or learning tasks were assigned.

Ask your child what was his/her favorite activity, what activity or content was the most difficult to accomplish, and why.

Do I need to speak the language of instruction to help my child during distance learning?

You don’t need to speak the language of instruction to help your child during distance learning.

You can always use the language in which you feel more comfortable explaining your ideas or giving directions.

You don’t have to be an expert! One of the most supportive things you can do is to be a partner in your child’s investigations and thinking. Think out loud or describe what you are doing as you do it, whether it is cooking, fixing something, taking care of pets, or other housework. Ask questions, even when you do not know the answer!

CommonLit Grades 3-12 Students can use the website to read a variety of texts, answer questions, pose questions, and analyze with online tools. Some features include text sets, translation services, scaffolds and leveled texts. Website can be linked to Google Classroom.
Discovery Ed Virtual Learning K-12 The Discovery Education platform provides access to thousands of "assignable, editable" activities, videos, ready-to-use lessons and other resources" for K-12 math, science, social studies, English language arts and health. Principals or a school leader has to register the school for teachers to gain access.
Great Minds: New Knowledge Building Daily Lessons Math K-12, ELA K-5, Science 3-5 Great Minds has free recorded learning resources available, including daily instructional videos, lesson plans, activities and the site is including daily updates to support distance learning. Teachers and parents can use these resources to supplement remote learning approaches.
Age of Learning Age 12 and under Age of learning is currently offering free reading resources for students age 12 and under at ABCmouse, Adventure Academy, and ReadingIQ. The resources include access to research based digital activities to support early learning and the development of literacy skills. The resources are FREE but a school administrator has to sign the school up for access.

Epic for Educators Elementary Elementary Teachers and Librarians are being provided with remote access to its reading platform for free until June 30, 2020. Students may access the company's digital library, which has 35,000-plus books, read-to-me and audiobooks, videos and quizzes. Students can be assigned books and/or collections and monitor progress. Accessible via web.
NewsELA Grades 2-12 NewsELA features common core aligned informational texts related to current events. Teachers have the ability to create texts/sets, questions and writing prompts to students for texts on grade level and/or provide differentiated options for students to read about the same topic with a text at their Lexile. Website and can be linked to Google classroom.
Science News for Educators Grades 9-12 Science News is dedicated to expanding scientific literacy in schools, recently released the "Coronavirus Outbreak Collection," which includes articles and updates about the virus, freely available resources, and even advice on how to cope with social distancing. Smithsonian Learning Lab All Ages The Smithsonian Learning Lab is providing access to museums, research centers, libraries, archives, and more via digital access. Teachers will also have access to pre-packaged collections that contain lessons, activities, and recommended resources created from Smithsonian Educators and Teachers.
Teaching Tolerance Grades K-12 Teaching Tolerance is offering teachers access to a variety of Social Justice topics through lessons, texts, students tasks, film kits and more.  There are also opportunities for teachers to provide differentiated and/or scaffolded supports through the use of leveled texts.
TEDed Elementary-University TED-Ed includes lessons, graphic organizers, and reflective questions. Listening and reflecting on TED Talks are great ways for students to practice writing and speaking (via recordings) in response to sources, using evidence from the text.
Khan Academy Grades K-12 Teachers will find standards-aligned content and have the ability to assign practice exercises, videos and articles, and track student progress in reading, math, science, humanities, and test prep. Can be linked to Google Classroom.
How can I provide students with content based practice in standards aligned skills? PBS Learning Lab pre-K-12 PBSLearning and Educators came together to create videos, lesson plans, and activities that support learning at home. Teachers can create an account on the PBS Learning Lab and invite their students to engage students in lessons, videos and activities to support remote learning. Learning packets for pre-K-grade 2 are available in addition to Spanish resources. Can be linked to Google Classroom.
Scholastic Learn at Home pre-K-12 Scholastic Magazines has combined engaging print magazines with digital resources to build knowledge, engagement and skills in every content area, there are resources available for all grade levels.

It is recommended that teachers share with students just the link of the reading selection instead of the link for the entire digital library.

It is recommended that teachers select the activities, videos, games or lessons before sharing the link with students. The websites have multiple resources, students can easily confuse the assignments and spend time exploring other resources not related to the topic, genre, or skill that was planned to practice.

ELs and bilingual students need visual support and meaningful feedback to improve their writing skills.  This website provides interactive lessons and visuals to help EL’s writing process.

What steps are LEA’s taking to implement distance learning during COVID-19?

Pursuant to 5-A DCMR §2100.3, OSSE allowed LEAs in the District of Columbia that have closed school buildings and moved to distance learning in response to coronavirus (COVID-19) to apply for waivers of requirements pertaining to the length of school year.

To receive an exemption from the requirement that the school year contain a minimum of 180, six-hour instructional days, LEAs submitted a distance learning implementation plan and instructional waiver application to OSSE.  

Applications were reviewed for completion and whether the distance learning implementation plan reasonably justified the LEA’s waiver request. OSSE’s review was not an evaluation on the quality of educational services provided through distance learning, and it does not satisfy any compliance monitoring with federal or local law.

LEAs were expected to implement their distance learning implementation plan consistent with their waiver request until their approved end date of school. These plans also helped to inform OSSE’s strategy in drafting the Guiding Principles for Continuous Education and other guidance pertaining to distance learning.
