During the 2020-21 school year students participated in learning in a variety of ways, sometimes in-person, others were in a remote learning model. Learning for students occurred in synchronous as well as asynchronous modes, meaning that sometimes a student was learning in real time with an instructor and others they were learning on their own after engaging in learning modules or independent work and then engaging with the class remotely. Attendance, while still collected daily by schools, was reported based on the learning environment (in-person or remote) that the student was participating in. Each LEA outlined their attendance procedures for the 2020-21 school year as a part of their continuous education plans. Due to these significant changes in learning environments and school schedules attendance rates may be quite different from prior years and should be viewed with this context in mind.
Overall attendance rates for all schools in DC, both in-seat attendance and chronic absenteeism, are displayed below. Additionally, you can view the attendance metrics by individual student groups, race/ethnicities, and can filter by school levels or types.
Additional information and analyses regarding attendance for the 2020-21 school year can be found in the OSSE Attendance report. School level attendance rates are reported on each school’s data snapshot and DC Overall, LEA, and school level metric data are also available in the public data file.
Chronic Absenteeism is when students are absent from school 10% or more of the days in the school year. This data represents the percentage of students in grades K-12 who are chronically absent.
Using the filters below you can view attendance rates across elementary, middle, high, and alternative schools. The default selection will display the rates of all schools. When filters are selected, they apply to all metrics on the page.
This data represents the percentage of students who are in attendance on any given school day. It is presented this year as an overall attendance rate as well as the rates of attendance for in-person as well as virtual learning days. PreK In-seat attendance is displayed as a separate metric and Adult students are included in the All Schools ISA calculation below.
