Statewide Assessments
OSSE administers annual statewide assessments in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. These assessments measure DC students’ grade-level proficiency on our state academic standards. ELA and math assessments are administered in grades 3-8 and in high school. The science assessment is administered in grades 5 and 8 as well as for high school biology.
You can explore these data using the filters provided below. For more information about how these assessments are developed and what they measure, please visit our assessments page.
Rates of Proficiency
This visualization displays the proportion of students meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations on the assessment.
Rates of Proficiency by Student Group
This visualization displays the proportion of students meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations on the assessment.
Participation and Adjusted Achievement Rates
This visualization displays the rates of student participation for each assessment, which is the percentage of test-eligible students who took the assessment. Schools are federally required to assess at least 95 percent of eligible students. The adjusted achievement rate is the percentage of students who met or exceeded expectations in each subject adjusted by participation rates as required by DC’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) state plan.
Student Performance Levels
This visualization displays student assessment results by performance level. The general ELA and math assessments have five performance levels; Level 1 is not yet meeting grade-level expectations, Level 2 is partially meeting expectations, Level 3 is approaching expectations, Level 4 is meeting expectations and Level 5 is exceeding expectations. The general science assessment has four performance levels; Level 1 is partially meeting expectations, Level 2 is approaching expectations, Level 3 is meeting expectations and Level 4 is exceeding expectations.
The general and alternate assessments are displayed separately. Students with significant cognitive disabilities take alternate assessments that each have four performance levels. For the MSAA alternate assessment for ELA and math, Level 1 is partially meeting expectations, Level 2 is approaching expectations, Level 3 is meeting expectations and Level 4 is exceeding expectations. For the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) alternate science assessment, Level 1 is emerging, Level 2 is approaching the target, Level 3 is at target and Level 4 is advanced.
