Race to the Top Application

On August 24, 2010, the US Department of Education awarded the District’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and participating local education agencies (LEAs) $75 million, over the next four years, to make significant changes and improvements to the District’s education system. A collaborative effort by the Deputy Mayor for Education, OSSE, DC Public Schools (DCPS), and charter LEAs, the District’s application proposed significant education reform initiatives built around four assurance areas: 

• Common Core Standards and Assessments
• Data and Accountability
• Great Teachers and Leaders
• Turning Around the Lowest-performing Schools
