Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) Grants

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law that makes available a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children. Children and youth ages 3-21 receive special education and related services under IDEA Part B.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) provides IDEA grant funding to local education agencies (LEAs) to support the needs of students with disabilities. Budgetary monitoring and federal reporting activities are conducted each year to ensure LEAs dedicate these resources to improved learning environments and outcomes for students with disabilities.

The IDEA Part B grant is authorized by IDEA of 2004 (20 USC §1411). OSSE currently administers approximately $26 million in funding to 68 grantees. The American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds included a supplemental increase to IDEA, Part B through ARP-IDEA 611 and ARP-IDEA 619.
