Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership

The DC Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) is a federal grant offered to District residents for education or training beyond the high school level. It is funded through matching funds by the District of Columbia and the Federal government. It is a need based award eligibility for which is based on a review of the financial information on the Student Aid Report (SAR). In addition to the LEAP, students are encouraged to apply for the full range of aid that may be available at their institution including the Pell Grant, College Work Study and other Federal and institutional scholarships and low-interest loans.

Applicants should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA (FAFSA) as soon as the family income information becomes available. In order to submit the DC LEAP application, you must have a copy of the SAR. You should receive the SAR directly from the Federal processor several weeks after you file the FAFSA. To ensure that your SAR is available when the LEAP application period begins, you should file the FAFSA by February 15. If your SAR comes to you in need of corrections, do not send it to us: make the corrections and resubmit it to the processor. Applications received without the SAR or without an index number or in need of corrections will not be reviewed. Complete applications must be received in the LEAP office by the June 28, 2002 deadline in order to be considered for funding in the 2002-2003 academic year. All applications received by the deadline will receive notice of their LEAP application status by August 1.

Complete applications with the SAR form will be reviewed and award decision letters will be sent to applicants as soon as we receive the applications from the school. Please note: Applicants for LEAP receive an estimated award based on information received from the school that completed the application. The award is estimated because it is based on the enrollment information that is on the application including credit load and academic standing. If the applicant enrolls for fewer or more credit hours, the award will be adjusted.

Institutions will be asked to provide enrollment verification information in September. When that information is received by our office, we will request first semester LEAP checks to be sent to the schools.
