Adult and Family Education 
Programs & Initiatives -- Citywide Literacy Initiative
 
Participating Agencies/Departments
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) coordinates the overall literacy agenda and programming across District agencies involved in the literacy initiative to ensure that a coherent, collaborative framework is developed to support these programs. As the lead agency, the OSSE works to:
  • Develop a cross-agency, citywide strategic plan for literacy
  • Establish and maintain a Literacy Policy Council that will provide guidance and identify resources for the District government’s literacy agenda
  • Oversee the work groups responsible for executing activities associated with the citywide literacy strategy
  • Coordinate the strategic execution of planned literacy programming, including program monitoring, funding, and quarterly reporting
  • Generate funding and resources to support citywide literacy programming
  • Support research and data collection to inform citywide literacy programming
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and with mayoral literacy policies including accountability for use of literacy funding
  • Oversee professional development related to the delivery of literacy programming.
