OSSE Hosts Adult College Completion Fair

Monday, April 20, 2015

The District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) recently hosted the inaugural Adult College Completion Fair at the R.I.S.E Demonstration Center. The fair was designed to educate adult learners who left college without obtaining a degree and first-time adult college students who are seeking pathways to college completion. The event featured college and career advising and resources; workshops on college admissions and financial aid; and information on career exploration.

“With 76 percent of all DC jobs requiring some postsecondary by the year 2020, it is imperative that we provide pathways and resources for students of all ages who are interested in continuing their education,” said Dr. Antoinette Mitchell, Assistant Superintendent for Postsecondary and Career Education.

The Adult College Completion Fair is the new event under the Adult College Completion Initiative at OSSE. OSSE’s Adult College Completion Initiative seeks to encourage adult learners who attended college, but left without obtaining a degree to earn their postsecondary credential. Adult learners often run into various challenges that prohibit them from completing their degree goal. The Adult College Completion Initiative aims to provide stronger institutionalized and community-based support for adult learners through a District-wide marketing campaign designed to educate adult learners about the available paths for college completion.
